What Makes a Good Teacher?
Take some time to reflect on your favorite teacher.
My favorite teacher was my sixth-grade teacher. She had a way of integrating things to make learning interesting. When we studied geography, she brought in famous artists of that country. She showed us prints of famous artwork, and we were asked to identify the artist. I guess you could call it art appreciation. We even got to visit a traveling Art Mobile and see some “real” works of art.
She also inspired a love of writing. We had some creative writing workbooks we would use. One topic I recall was “Interplanetary Diseases”. We had to write a story about that. We also studied Hink Pinks. Those are word riddles like, “What do you call a plump feline?” A “fat cat.” It was a fun year and unquestionably my favorite.
I remember those activities, but I really remember her because of the way she made me feel. She made me feel creative and competent.
She moved away the next year, but we kept in touch, and I sent her birthday cards for over 40 years.
When you thought of your favorite teacher, did you remember the subject or the qualities the teacher exhibited? When people are asked to remember their teachers, they often say things like the teacher:
made learning fun
were prepared
were respectful/kind
were excited about what they taught
had good control of the class
As you begin your year, think about the kind of teacher you want to be. What steps will you take to achieve that goal?
